ANNOUNCEMENTS MESSAGE  BOARD

It's now official!   When the current group of six adult Thursday classes are over (last day Mar. 13th), I will be postponing indefinitely all formal adult class sessions.  The last youth class will be June 7th.  As I had hoped, my professional career has progressed to the point to where I want the time and energy to produce more original works to meet the growing demands and exhibition invitations that are blessedly coming my way.  Of course, in the event I put together workshops or start classes up again (2009 or later), you will all be notified.

It is with a mixture of excitement and sadness that I cease teaching you all after being with some of you from the beginning some seven years ago.  I have thoroughly enjoyed each and every one of you and have grown as an artist and as a person in so many ways as a result of being a part of your lives.  I also have a deep and abiding admiration for your exceptional talent, your self-discipline and focus, and for your very unique and inspiring personalities.  I hope you will all keep in touch with me down the road of life and my door is always open to critique your work should you wish.  With fondness always, Kay Witherspoon

Curriculum
Designed for the artist - beginner, intermediate, or advanced - who wants to develop their skills in capturing subject and mood with line, form, design, and the layers of light.  Class critiques, demonstrations, and open discussions center on conceptual themes, techniques, and composition.  Aspects of the business side of art are also covered, such as preparing works for exhibitions, marketing, gallery selection, and so forth.  Students work on their own subjects, with individual demonstrations and handouts designed to expand visual and cognitive understanding and skills (painting materials and techniques, color theory, and the basic art principles of composition and design, values, contrast, texture, and perspective).  (Review the my work within this website for an idea of my own style and the techniques I use.)

I also share with students information on: how to exhibit; framinmg art; resources and networking lists; pros and cons of various lighting; and the various pros and cons on being a professional and/or selling artist with the intent of helping students avoid the mistakes I've made and maximize their own productivity and success.

Supplies and Materials:   Brushes are specialized and may be purchased from Witherspoon Fine Art.   Click here for the supply list as well as art supply stores and art supply internet sites.

Keep in mind that art supplies, like musical instruments, are an important and expensive investment.  There are a multitude of art products in existence and there are usually vital reasons why some materials are listed on the supply list while others you may find are not.  Substitutions or omissions can undermine a student's ability to produce pleasing results or a successful outcome.  Please call or email art@kaywitherspoon.com with any questions you may have about your supplies.

A general supply list will be made available upon enrollment via the student's email, mailing address, or by fax.   Supplies can be stored in the classroom in private cubbies and taboret drawers.  Supplies can be easily transported in a plastic hinged-drawer tool box or tackle box available at Walmart, Target, Home Depot or most hardware or art supply store.  Portable, durable canvas bags are great for larger, miscellaneous supplies.

* Please Note:
Parents and students are reminded that painting materials are hazardous.  Students are encouraged to wear rubber gloves and a paint smock and to wash paint off when in contact with their skin.  Windows and doors are kept open, fans circulate the air, and an air filtration unit is kept on.  Payment of the class fee signifies that parents and students have read this warning and accept responsibility for the risks involved in oil painting.
