Built
1887-1889, Denver Landmark #20
*The
Molly Brown House 1340 Pennsylvania
Also
known as the House of Lions, the Molly Brown House was purchased in
1894 by mining magnate James Joseph Brown, owner of one of the richest
gold mines in history and husband of the famous "Maggie"
Brown, heroine in the musical production "The Unsinkable Molly
Brown"
Built 1902, Denver
Landmark #95
*The
Gramt-Humphreys Mansion 770 Pennsylvania
Built
by James B. Grant, the third governor of Colorado and founder of the
Colorado Women's College, it was purchased by iron and oil magnate
Albert E. Humphreys in 1917. Bequeathed to the state in 1976 the
grounds now serve as a city park with the building itself serving as
offices including Historic-Denver Inc.
Built 1908,
Denver Landmark #1
*The
Governor's Mansion 400 E. 8th Avenue
The
Governor's Mansion was built by Walter S. Cheesman, founder of the
Union Depot Company and the city water works. Sold in 1926 to
Claude Boettcher, the home was donated to the state in 1960 and now
serves as the Governor's Mansion.
Built 1909, Denver Landmark #10
*The
D & F Tower 1601 Arapahoe
The
Daniels and Fisher Tower, once the nation's third tallest structure at
330 feet, was Denver's tallest building and stately sentinel to the
Queen City of the Plains until 1958. Inspired by the campanile
of St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice, Italy it has been Denver's most
beloved landmark. Today only the tower remains.
Built 1889, Denver Landmark #79
*The
Dunning-Benedict Home 1200 Pennsylvania St.
This
home is quite possibly the finest of Denver landmarks exemplifying the
Richardsonian Romanesque style. Designed by the architect of the
Molly Brown House, it was constructed for Denver real estate
entrepreneur Walter Dunning and later purchased by Supreme Court
Justice Mitchell Benedict.
Built 1883, Denver Landmark #32
*Richthofen
Castle 7020 E. 12th Avenue
Constructed
by Baron Walter Von Richthofen and later sold to Edwin B. Hendrie,
Richthofen's Castle barely resembles its original castle-like
appearance due to extensive remodeling in 1910. Still a favorite
landmark to Coloradoans, the castle was offered for sale in 1981 for
1.2 million dollars.
