"Interacting
with nature and wildlife is, for me, synonymous with summertime. Since
Canadian geese and other migratory waterfowl frequent our local waterways
during the summer months so it’s the perfect time to develop in our young an appreciation and respect
for our natural world through first hand experience. This delightful
boy’s spontaneous gesture to share his food is an international and
species wide gesture signifying safety and a desire to interact and care
for these remarkable creatures. " Kay Witherspoon -
loving mother of the boy featured in the painting.

This year, the 49th
Annual Art and the Animal exhibit will visit
just six select locations. Greenacres Arts Center will be the final
stop on the 2009-2010 tour. This exciting opportunity to see original
work by some of the world’s most accomplished wildlife artists, would
not have been possible without the support of our Honorary Chairmen,
John and Judy Ruthven.

John and Judy Ruthven
John
Ruthven, known as the “20th Century Audubon” has been a member of
the Society of Animal Artists for many years. As an internationally
acknowledged master of wildlife art, John wanted Cincinnatians to have
the opportunity to enjoy animal art at its finest. As an avid
outdoorsman, John feels that animal and art lovers of all ages will
delight in the exquisite paintings and sculptures represented in
Art and the Animal. Judy, an accomplished
historian and restorer, feels that the Greenacres Arts Center is the
quintessential location for a show of this magnitude. The Arts Center
is located in a beautifully restored English Norman style manor house
surrounded by acres of farmland and lush woods. “We are thrilled to be
part of this event. It’s a perfect match with the showcase of
Greenacres and a special group of the finest wildlife artists sharing
this venue here in beautiful Cincinnati,” say the Ruthvens.

The Arts Center provides
programming that engages children in music, visual arts, drama and
dance. Area schools bring students to the Arts Center for an
integrated arts experience. Art and the
Animal will be the focus of
the Arts Center curriculum during the exhibition’s tenure. With the
majority of students arriving from disadvantaged circumstances, the
opportunity to learn, appreciate and enjoy the arts is an invaluable
experience for them. The exclusive pieces of art traveling |
|
in the national
tour are available for purchase. Proceeds from Art and the
Animal will be directed to a restricted fund providing
students transportation to and from Greenacres. Without this funding,
underprivileged children would lose exposure to the fine arts and the
chance to experience the pastoral setting of Greenacres. Public
viewing hours for Art and the Animal will be
restricted because of the Arts Center school-based programming on
weekdays; therefore, many special events are being planned. Please
see the event calendar for details and dates and join us at our
exciting and unique occasions.
